“Front Line of the Cold War – Combat Survival

The RAF aircrew who flew on the frontline with the V-Force (Valiants, Vulcans and Victors) during the Cold War all faced the reality of being shot-down or bailing out behind enemy lines. There you would face not only very hostile people but also the environments. So each aircrew member needed to understand and learn the techniques of Combat Survival. That included survival in such environments as the desert, jungle, artic and sea, techniques for escape and evasion and if caught how best to try and cope with and resist interrogation.

My squadron secondary duty and specialism was as a Combat Survival officer and that led me on many adventures at sea, in the jungle and in the snow. Unlike some of my friends I was fortunate in not having to put that training into practice”.
